The Business Case for Cloud Software in Every Machine

Every modern piece of equipment, from a delivery van to a lawn mower, has a small computer inside it. This computer runs embedded software, known as firmware, which controls the basic functions of the machine. It decides when motors spin, how energy flows, and what safety limits to enforce. Firmware is powerful. But it also has a blind spot. Most of the time, firmware operates in isolation. It runs the machine locally but does not communicate with anything outside of it. That means the thousands of data points being created every second — temperature, voltage, usage patterns, wear — often stay trapped inside the device. And that is a missed opportunity.
